Continuing Studies
Welcome to the School of Design Continuing Studies
In addition to our certificate, diploma and degree programs, Kwantlen's School of Design provides relevant, quality educational programming for a variety of learners. Our courses are taught by our qualified faculty and industry professionals. We offer a range of courses, workshops, seminars and programs of study to help you achieve your goals.
Alpenglow Design-Build
“Alpenglow” is a Summer 2013 class that will allow students to design and build an outdoor deck / play structure for the Ronald McDonald House BC (RMHBC).
Working in two teams of up to 10, students will help design, prefabricate and assemble the deck. The course will explore: wood innovation, including design and project management time in the studio; hands-on building experience; and develop sustainable design solutions.
The deck will include a play area and BBQ with a graphic component highlighting the ongoing need for funding from the local community and potential donors. The deck will become an integral part of the cluster of homes creating a special community within this space.
Students will document the design and final built structure in an end-of-course book that will help define the program’s goals for next summer.
This is a non-credit course open to Kwantlen students in graphic design, interior design and product design programs; and to UBC students in architecture, landscape architecture and environmental design programs (SALA).
The course will be taught in 6 sessions: Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The first class will start with a site visit on July 6. Building sessions will be held the first and second weekends of August.
